Yoga is one of the fastest growing types of exercise. Though it has been practiced for centuries, it has only gained mainstream approval, meaning you can easily find yoga classes in your local fitness club or video store. If Yoga is an interest, then it's essential to find out which style of yoga is suited to you. There are many styles of Yoga that are practiced today. The different styles are all based on the same basic poses but they each differ slightly in their emphasis. There are many more styles than listed here, with many gyms offering their own style, which is often a combination of several other styles. Here is a list of the most popular Yoga styles and what they represent so you can decide on the best one for you.
Hatha Hatha Yoga encompasses many physical types of yoga. This traditional style yoga is typically slow-paced with gentle movements. This is a good starting place as the exercises are likely to be easy and basic. Vinyasa Vinyasa Yoga is another widely used term to describe a yoga style. It generally provides a more vigorous style of yoga in which breathing is synchronized to movements. One of the warm-up exercises is typically the Sun Salutation, which is followed by more intense positions and stretching. Astanga and Power Yoga The word Astanga means 'eight limbs' in Sanskrit. This Yoga is a faster paced and more intense style. In this yoga style a set group of poses is done in the same order, as a routine. There is much movement or flow and it is more physically demanding than other methods of yoga. Power Yoga stemmed from Astanga yoga and is a popular type of yoga at many gyms and studios. Similar to Astanga in movement, Power http://www.vpoweryoga.com/ Yoga may not follow a set routine. Iyengar This style of Yoga is based Yoga Music on the teachings of yogi B.K.S. Iyengar. The main emphasis on this style of yoga is body alignment. This type of yoga stresses holding the poses for long periods of time. This type of yoga also uses props such as blocks and straps, which help keep the body aligned during exercise. Kundalini In Kundalini Yoga the emphasis is on breathing in conjunction with the physical movements. It is believed that this allows the body's lower body energy to be freed to move upward. This style emphasizes controlling the breath along with more rapid and repetitive poses and may use chanting to keep the breath in rhythm. Anusara A relatively new style of yoga, it is popular at some studios because it uses a positive philosophy, which is derived from Tantra. There is a general belief that all things are good. These types of classes are usually less strict than other classes in nature so the atmosphere is often more casual and fun. Props are often used in this style. Sivananda This style of yoga was founded in 1957 and is popular in many locations worldwide. It is based on five principles: exercise, breathing, relaxation, diet and meditation. Vinyasa yoga is a term that covers a wide range of yoga styles. The term vinyasa refers to the coordination of breath and movement. This method turns a static asana, such as poses done in Iyengar yoga, into a dynamic flow (in fact, Vinyasa is often called "flow yoga" or "Vinyasa flow").
The breath is one of the most important concepts in Vinyasa yoga, as teachers should be instructing their students to move from one pose to another on an inhale or an exhale. In Sanskrit, the word Vinyasa means "connection," and most interpret this as the connection between movement and breath. History It is said that teacher Ramamohana Brahmachari read the Yoga Korunta (a purported ancient text on yoga) to Tirumalai Krishnamacharya in the early 20th century. Further, he also taught Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the year 1927. Pattabhi Jois used this teaching as the basis of his entire method of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, which he introduced in 1948. Unfortunately, this remains open to speculation because the existence of this oral transmission is unverifiable. On top of that, the ancient text has not been preserved. It is said that the text was written in stanzas, utilizing rhymed, metered sutras (as was common in the oral transmission of texts in the guru-shishya tradition). The Yoga Korunta (which is the Tamilized pronunciation of the Sanskrit words Yoga grantha, meaning "book about yoga") supposedly described several different groupings of asanas, as well as many unique Santa Monica Power Yoga teachings on vinyasa, bandhas, mudras, and drishti. It also included many other general teachings. Krishnamacharya had much influence on yoga as it is taught today. Many notable teachers were students of his, including K. Pattabhi Jois, B.K.S. Iyengar, and Indra Devi. He taught people to focus on the specific concerns of the group or person that he was teaching. Opening up his own yoga school, he adapted the teachings of the Yoga Korunta for the young boys that lived in the area...and these teachings are what we now know to be Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga. There are many Vinyasa styles. Some of the most well known ones are: Nusara Ashtanga Bikram/Hot Yoga Forrest Jivamukti Moksha/Modo Power Yoga Method What makes Vinyasa different from other types of yoga is that it is often faster paced, and there is a great focus on synchronizing the movements with the breath. This faster paced form of yoga will give you an added cardiovascular benefit. Most of the time, you will be inhaling when performing upward movements, and exhaling during downward movements. Although a Vinyasa class will vary from teacher to teacher, most classes will begin with sun salutations. This is a sequence of poses where each posture flows into the next. The following is a typical sequence for a sun salutation: Starting in mountain pose (Tadasana), circle your arms down and then to your sides, finally arriving upwards. With your palms pressing together overhead, arch your back and look up at your hands. From here, you want to get into the next pose which is standing forward bend (Uttanasana). To get there, bend forward at the hips and bring your arms to your side (in swan dive fashion). Then, bring your hands to the floor, with the goal of getting your palms flat on the floor. From here, either walk or jump back into plank position (similar position to when you are getting ready to do a push-up). After plank position, we want to now transition into downward facing dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana). To do this, press back with your hands, and bring your bottom up to the ceiling. Focus on drawing your weight back to your heels. Next, we want to transition into into Chaturanga Dandasana. To do this, we first go back into plank. From here, lower your torso and leg to a few inches above the floor. Focus on keeping the tailbone firmly in place with the legs vary active. From here, we can finally arrive at upward facing dog (Urdhva Mukha Svanasana). From Chaturanga position, straighten your arms, bringing your torso and legs up off the floor as if you were doing a half push-up. Be sure to lengthen the sides of your body and keep your neck long. After this, we can push back into downward facing dog, and then jump our feet back in to arrive back at standing forward bend position. From here, bring your arms out to your sides and start straightening back up until your arms are reaching towards the sky again. Finally, arrive back at mountain pose. After a few series of sun salutations, your teacher will then bring you through their own sequence of movements, aligning the flow of movement with your breath. This sequence will generally be more physically demanding then the sun salutations. Don't have any doubts though, because you should now be nice and warmed up! You will get a great cardio workout from this type of yoga. When deciding what to wear to your class, keep in mind that Vinyasa yoga involves a lot of movement. It is suggested to wear something that you are comfortable in to easily flow from one pose to another. Here is an article on some of the newest, hottest yoga gear. Be sure to call and ask what you should bring. If the yoga studio doesn't supply them, you should probably bring your own yoga mat, a towel, and a water bottle to keep yourself hydrated. You might even want to bring some of your own yoga props , such as belts or blocks. Benefits Although the benefits of following a Vinyasa yoga program are many, here is a list of a few: Increase in muscle strength Increase in muscle endurance Improved flexibility Reduced levels of stress Better cardiovascular conditioning The following video can show what a Vinyasa beginner's class would teach you: Is Vinyasa Right for You? If you want a yoga practice that focuses around movement, then Vinyasa is for you. Many people in the modern world enjoy this type of yoga because it really works the cardiovascular system. The Rugby, England, resident posted photos on Facebook last week to show how dramatic a panic attack can alter not only a person's emotional state, but their physical state as well.
"I've been battling with anxiety and depression for years and years and there's still people that make comments like, 'You'll get over it; you don't need tablets; just be happier; you're too young to suffer with that," Smith wrote in a post, which more than 16,000 people shared online. Smith is one of the millions of people worldwide suffering from a mental health disorder. Between 1990 and 2013, the number of people suffering from depression or anxiety, two of the most common mental disorders, increased by nearly 50%, from 416 million to 615 million globally, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Although that figure is climbing, investing in treatment could lead to healthier people, and even healthier economies. For every U.S. dollar invested in treating depression and anxiety, there was a $4 return in better health and ability to work, according to a new WHO-led study published Tuesday in The Lancet Psychiatry. The study is the first to argue that there are global economic benefits in investing in treatments for depression and anxiety. "We know that treatment of depression and anxiety makes good sense for health and well-being; this new study confirms that it makes sound economic sense, too," said Margaret Chan, director-general of WHO in a statement. "We must now find ways to make sure that access to mental health services becomes a reality for all men, women and children, wherever they live," Chan said. The study calculated estimated treatment costs and health outcomes in 36 nations countries from 2016 to 2030. If the United States scaled up its cost of treatment, it would cost the United States about $147 billion. But the return would outweigh the expense, according to the report. There would be a 5% improvement in worker participation and productivity, which is valued at $399 billion. The improved health adds another $310 billion in returns, more than doubling on the government's return on investment. However, the investment in mental health care is far lower. WHO's Mental Health Atlas 2014 survey found governments that spend an average 3% of their health budgets on mental health. Poorer nations tended to spend less than 1%, while wealthier countries spend 5%. Humanitarian emergencies and ongoing conflict add further to the need for scale-up of treatment options. WHO estimates that, during emergencies, as many as 1 in 5 http://www.osho.com/meditate/ people are affected by depression and anxiety. Mental disorders remain in the shadows in many parts of world, according to Jim Yong Kim, president of the World Bank Group. "This is not just a public health issue -- it's a development issue. We need to act now because the lost productivity is something the global economy simply cannot afford," he said in a statement. As for Smith, she wants the stigma toward people with anxiety to end. "People that think that because I physically look 'fine' that I'm not battling a monster inside my head every single day," she writes. And she urges those suffering alone to reach out for help and support. "The more awareness there is, the less people will suffer in mindfulness meditation for anxiety silence," Smith writes. http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/12/health/anxiety-depression-treatment-economy-irpt/index.html As a Team Beachbody® Coach, Owner and Chief Fitness Instructor Amy Carr provides Novalife Fitness students with exclusive access to Team Beachbody® fitness programs, tools, easy-to-follow meal plans, nutrition advice, and support to help them reach their fitness goals and enjoy healthy, fulfilling lives!

Several studies suggest that these changes through meditation can make you happier, less stressed -- even nicer to other people. It can help you control your eating habits and even reduce chronic pain, all the while without taking prescription medication. Meditation is an intimate and intense exercise that can be done solo or in a group, and one study showed that 20 million Americans say they practice meditation. It has been used to help treat addictions, to clear psoriasis and even to treat men with impotence. The U.S. Marines are testing meditation to see if it makes more focused, effective ashtanga yoga warriors. Corporate executives at Google, General Mills, Target and Aetna Insurance, as well as students in some of the nation's classrooms have used meditation. Various celebrities also are known meditators, including shock jock Howard Stern, actors Richard Gere, Goldie Hawn and Heather Graham, and Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer of the band Weezer. In one study, a research team from Massachusetts General Hospital looked at the brain scans of 16 people before and after they participated in an eight-week course in mindfulness meditation. The study, published in the January issue of Psychiatry Research: Neuroimaging, concluded that after completing the course, parts of the participants' brains associated with compassion and self-awareness grew, and parts associated with stress shrank. READ: Meditation 101: Tips for Beginners Recently, the Dalai Lama granted permission for his monks, who are master mediators, to have their brains studied at the benefits of yoga University of Wisconsin, one of the most high-tech brain labs in the world. Richie Davidson, a PhD at the university, and his colleagues, led the study and said they were amazed by what they found in the monks' brain activity read-outs. During meditation, electroencephalogram patterns increased and remains higher than the initial baseline taken from a non-meditative state. But you don't have to be a monk to benefit from meditation, which is now gaining acceptance in the field of medicine. Physicians have increasingly started prescribing meditation instead of pills to benefit their patients. A Harvard Medical School http://www.nytimes.com/topic/subject/yoga report released in May found that more than 6 million Americans had been recommended meditation and other mind-body therapies by conventional health care providers. Perhaps the most mind-bending potential benefit of meditation is that it will actually make practitioners nicer. Chuck Raison, a professor at Emory University, conducted a meditation study in which he hooked up microphones to participants who had been taught basic meditation and those who hadn't. He then recorded them at random over a period of time. Raison found that these newly-trained mediators used less harsh language than people who had no meditation experience. "They were more empathic with people," Raison said. "They were spending more time with other people. They laugh more, you know, all those things. They didn't use the word 'I' as much. They use the word 'we' more." However, even the Dalai Lama admitted that meditation is not the silver bullet cure-all for every ailment or emotion. "Occasionally, [I] lose my temper," he said. "If someone is never lose temper then perhaps that may come from outer space, real strange." The Dalai Lama also cautioned that meditation takes patience, so new mediators should not expect immediate results. "The enlightenment not depend on rank," he said, laughing. "It depends on practice." Some scientists believe that in a generation, Americans will see meditation as being as essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle as diet and exercise.
